Our beginnings
In 1995 our founder Peter Taylor launched First Mobile in New Zealand. Over the next decade Peter steadily grew the business to become the largest independent retailer of Vodafone products and services in that country.
2002 saw Peter and the team applying the knowledge they gained in New Zealand to a brand new market. First Mobile acquired Melbourne-based Mobiletronics Australia and re-branded all the existing stores under the First Mobile banner.
Mobiletronics Australia began trading in 2006 with the announcement that it was to become an exclusive Vodafone Platinum Business Partner and a separate entity to it’s parent company. Today Mobiletronics Australia has over 60 representatives across Australia. The business continues to be the only company in Australia to partner with VHA in the capacity of a Platinum Partner providing premium mobility solutions to the SME market.
Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA)
Vodafone Group Plc is the world’s leading mobile telecommunications company, with a significant presence in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and the United States through the Company’s subsidiary undertakings, joint ventures, associated undertakings and investments.
In Australia, Vodafone is operated by Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA), a 50:50 joint venture between Vodafone Group Plc and Hutchison 3G Australia.
In June 2009, 3 and Vodafone Australia merged businesses through a 50:50 joint venture between Vodafone Group and Hutchison 3G Australia, operating under Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA).VHA is now owned 50% by Hutchison Whampoa Group, and 50% by Vodafone Group Plc. As at 30 September 2009, there are 6.3 million VHA customers in Australia. Vodafone was awarded the third Australian mobile telecommunications carrier license in December 1992.
The merger has resulted in Mobiletronics Australia remaining as the only national Platinum partner for VHA.
It now provides 3G coverage to 94 per cent of Australians, giving consumers and business affordable access to innovative 3G services, such as internet and email on their mobile phone, or laptop via Vodafone Mobile Broadband, on-the-move.
